In pre-colonial Congo, Nkisi was the name of a ritual figure. Melika Ngombe Kolongo, a.k.a. Nkisi, is a New York-based DJ, producer and co-founder of NON (alongside Chino Amobi and Angel-Ho), a collective of African artists, of the diaspora and of gender minorities, created in 2015. Her hypnotic sets, balancing between brutal militaristic beat, crystalline glissandi and pseudo-trance soundscapes, belong to the best of current post-club production (represented by Total Freedom, Lotic, Kablam or M.E.S.H.). From contemporary African club sound to de-constructed rave, interwoven with bastardised fragments of mainstream pop and R’N’B. Ambient gabber is real!
