Introduction to Modular Synthesis – Lecture

Introductory theoretical course into modular synthesis will focus on the fundamental theory of sound and psychoacoustics. Basics in synthesis will be explained by deconstructing sounds into 3 basic entities: pitch, timbre and amplitude. The concept of modularity will be analysed – expanding on the subtractive vs. additive synthesis approaches.

Beginner Course in Modular Synthesis I – Hands On
SATURDAY 25.11., 12.00-14.00, A4, Karpatská 2

In the beginner course the participants will get to understand the basing techniques of creating “the patch” and learn some of the core modules: oscillator, filter, amplifier, mixer. Due to wide range of possibilities in modular synthesis, the far ends of the spectrum will be explored – we will be looking at maximum number of synthesis techniques using minimum number of modules. No prior knowledge is needed but attending the “Introduction to modular synthesis” on the day before is highly recommended!

Modular synthesizers are provided therefore there is limited capacity. Bring your own headphones!

Advanced Course in Modular Synthesis II – Hands On
SATURDAY 25.11., 15.00-17.00, A4, Karpatská 2
Leaders: Václav Peloušek / Bastl Instruments

In the advanced course the participants will learn some more hidden techniques and tricks of modular synthesis. Chaotic behaviours, make your own filter topology, passive mixing, making patch with sound design in mind: mastering inside the eurorack. These are some of the topics that could be explored based on the particular interest of the group. Practical experience of using modular synths is required. Understanding the basic module types and patch building is necessary to enter the course.
